| Beersel is part of that area of Flemish Brabant situated between the southern rim of the Brussels conurbation and Walloon Brabant.
The area is bounded to the west by the valley of the Zenne. In this valley the lord of Beersel built his castle. This moated stronghold, with its towers and walls provided with embrasures and ditches, is an example of medieval military architecture. Beersel has hilly surroundings. At this point the clay plateau of Brabant is cut through by the valleys of various streams, some of whose slopes are fairly steep. This makes the area so attractive to walkers, since the seclusion of small dales and sunken paths alternates with broad, distant views. Compared to other churches, the one in Alsemberg is actually a miniature Gothic cathedral. It is a pilgrimage church, built between the 14th and the 16th centuries in honour of a statue of Mary which is said to have been presented to the parish in the 13th century by Sofia, the Duchess of Brabant. Gastronomes will find what they desire in various restaurants in Beersel as well as in several country inns. The latter also serve sandwiches with plattekaas, a local speciality. This snack tastes best with a gueuze or cherry lambic beer. And in this respect you are also in the right place for in Beersel a brewery still produces these local beers. |
